Job Description: Controller
Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the Accounting Department and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial operations. This role works closely with finance leadership, project management, and human resources to support payroll, reporting, compliance, and budgeting activities.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
- Manage and supervise accounting staff responsible for accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll.
- Set performance expectations and conduct annual performance reviews for accounting team members.
- Oversee daily accounting operations to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Payroll & Employee Compensation
- Review and submit weekly payroll for direct deposit.
- Oversee payroll processing, payroll liabilities, and certified payroll requirements.
- Set up and maintain prevailing wage rates and fringe benefits within the accounting system.
- Implement employee raises, cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), and job profit bonuses.
- Process IEC raises and maintain compensation-related records.
Accounting & Financial Operations
- Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable functions.
- Authorize daily Positive Pay transactions.
- Manage ACH payments and review electronic invoices for payment approval.
- Review large purchase orders prior to payment.
- Manage company credit card accounts and review statements for accuracy.
- Reconcile all bank accounts on a regular basis.
- Review service invoices for accuracy and compliance.
Reporting, Budgeting & Analysis
- Maintain backlog reporting and communicate financial data with the project management team.
- Attend budget meetings and prepare summary reports for the executive leadership team.
- Compile, analyze, and report financial data to support business decisions.
Benefits, Compliance & Insurance
- Administer 401(k) enrollments, process weekly contributions, and manage annual 401(k) audits.
- Prepare annual profit-sharing census reports and related communications.
- Manage business insurance policies and coordinate renewals.
- Lead and support workers' compensation audits as required.
Systems & Data Management
- Review and maintain employee information within the accounting and HR systems.
- Partner with Human Resources to ensure accurate employment and payroll data.
Required Skills & Abilities

- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
- Experience with accounting software; familiarity with Foundation or similar systems preferred.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred (not required).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in an accounting or finance role.
- Prior experience in a supervisory or management role is strongly preferred.
